Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

WEEE is the fastest growing waste stream in the UK. Derived from the EU’s WEEE Directive, the UK’s WEEE Regulations aim to reduce the amount of this waste going to landfill, and increase recovery and recycling rates.

There are certain requirements for WEEE relating to:

• separate collection, disposal and recycling
• standards for its treatment at authorised facilities
• collection, recycling and recovery targets.
• evidence systems for proof of compliance and foreign treatment equivalence.

Key dates

• The regulations came into force on 2 January 2007.
• Producers had to join a compliance scheme by 15 March 2007.
• Full responsibility for treating and recycling WEEE began on 1 July 2007.
• The next compliance period runs from 1st January 2008 until 31st December 2008.
• Both the EU Directive and the UK Regulations will be updated soon.

CKS Group has three facilities that deal with various elements of WEEE processing:

• CKS Electronic Recycling (Cindeford) is an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF) that provides secure recycling and environmental disposal under a full ATF waste management license.
• CKS Recycled Technology (Rushden) is an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF) that provides secure refurbishment under a paragraph 49 exemption.
• Green PC is a registered waste broker and Approved Exporter (AE) that moves specific components to specialist reprocessors in Europe, e.g. certain battery types.

After successfully completing internal trials during October, CKS's new recycling plant in Cinderford is fully operational and has attained ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 status. This state of the art facility offers...

• Full Annex II dismantling – to maximise component and recyclate returns.
• Focus on B2B customers – with processing specifically geared to return maximum informational value to both producers and corporate customers.
• Focus on corporate office equipment – especially IT/Telecoms products.
• Secure facility – to ensure an integrated approach to high-security treatment of data, software licensing and the underlying hardware.

CKS Group will accept unusable brown goods, IT and telecommunications equipment for reuse, donations preparation, disassembly, component removal and material separation. We deliver high yields and peace of mind to our customers.
