Data Protection
Anyone responsible for managing data bearing assets must understand their legal obligations, as well as the consequences if that data were to pass outside of their control. The Data Protection Act 1998 places many requirements on everyone to ensure information is handled properly. Although the DPA is complex and has many risks for the unwary, compliance is not difficult if the Information Commissioners guidance and DPA's eight principles are followed - full details are on www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk.
If you are found guilty of a breach, the penalties can be horrifying. With a fine of up to £5,000 per record and unlimited damages for anyone affected by the breach, the financial consequence could be disastrous. This is a dreadful nightmare which all too easily becomes a terrifying reality for those organisations that dont manage their IT disposal properly.
