Leading the Waste and Recycling Industry

In just nine months the CKS Group plc, one of the UK's leading end-of-life information technology organisations and an Ofex-listed company, has achieved ISO:9001, ISO:14001 and Investors in People accreditations. This significant achievement, particularly given the timeframes, reflects CKS's determination to pioneer intelligent, innovative and environmentally sound business practices. CKS believe a minimum standard in terms of bringing intelligence to the process should be adopted, particularly with the forthcoming EU's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE).

Dave Sutcliffe, Sales Director for CKS explains why these standards are so important, 'With the increasing importance of corporate and personal data protection, together with the need to manage end-of-life equipment in line with ever increasing environmental disposal issues, CKS believe company decisions about IT assets will trigger a set of activity just as complicated as initial procurement.

'Industry will need to develop lifecycle based costing models, and through reuse, refurbishing, resale and redeployment, businesses could receive a significant return on assets that have reached first end-of-life use.' He continues, 'Currently it's difficult for businesses to identify a company they can trust with their end-of-life IT equipment.

The only way to maximise the financial benefit and minimise their liability with regards to their duty of care and the Data Protection Act will be to engage with a company like CKS that has the appropriate accreditations and licences to ensure full compliance with current and emerging legislation.' As a stakeholder with ePolitix, the UK's premier politics website, the Parliamentary Sustainable Waste Group, as well as a member of ICER (Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling), CKS is at the forefront of discussions around the WEEE Directive and is determined to move the emphasis away from a discussion of waste, to one of 'waste avoidance', a far more positive message.
