Building on the success of our waste avoidance approach, CKS has extended its capability into next generation recycling facilities which are geared to deliver tomorrow’s standards, today. These facilities deliver integrated treatment for office equipment – including solutions to the high plastic content of modern machines
- Reverse Manufacturing - CKS has in-depth product knowledge that it can apply to achieve Annex II separation as required by the WEEE Directive. By adding intelligence to waste, CKS is able to ensure more effective de-pollution by removing hazards pre-shredding. More importantly given the increasing plastic content
of the waste stream, CKS is able to remove plastic panels intact, preserving the manufacturer’s marking and building consistent feed-stock to facilitate high-value plastics reprocessing. The results are higher yields, cleaner recyclate and increased reuse potential.
- Item Based Tracking – For equipment from corporate sources that has passed through our reuse facility, CKS has detailed information about the equipment on an item-by-item basis. This changes the game for us and delivers a huge new benefit to our customers. For us it is not about raw tonnage, it is about the processing efficiency, safety issues and ecodesign feedback that we can generate for specific brands and models of equipment. The data we generate is typically far more valuable than the raw materials value that we could ever recover. This data has relevance to endcustomers in proving lease termination and to justify cessation of maintenance charges. It has relevance to producers who care about
the feedback derived from end-of-life processing and it has relevance to us as we determine the responsible party under the “polluter pays”
principle.
- Cradle-to-cradle Solutions – Our sector focus brings with it a unique recognition of global flows associated with the equipment we process. We know that many of the appliances we process are manufactured in the Far East and we recognise that the plastics used are a by-product of a scarce oil supply in that region. We know what we need to do to support these flows and understand the impact of new restrictions on returning certain recyclate streams for re-manufacturing. Our materials knowledge helps us find local applications for problematic compounds and we continue to
innovate with partners in developing new uses for resources that should not end up in disposal.
