Corporate Social Responsibility - We're helping
Globalisation and the relentless drive to increase competitiveness have made it harder for third world countries to climb out of poverty using their traditional industries. Paradoxically, these forces have also created new opportunities for them. Information technology and improved communications help to create a level playing field. This gives third world countries a fighting chance to compete in the global market for services such as call centres and data management. But the key is education - and we're helping.
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime.
For a third world country to take advantage of this chance to fend for itself, education is crucial. But acquiring IT skills requires teachers, hardware and software. These are scarce resources, constantly being hunted by the voluntary organisations operating in these countries.
From the very start of IT recycling, we recognised the value of computers which are too old to sell. Those PCs may be of no use to us, but they do present a previously impossible opportunity for third world children to learn IT skills. By persuading clients to either donate or sell their PCs at nominal rates, we've provided over 10,000 IT products and given practical assistance to local organisations, helping them educate these children with IT skills. We've also extended our support by securing donations of other supplies such as air conditioning and medical equipment, and we're looking further.
We know we can't solve all their problems. But we can help them to help themselves.
